Language: In writing, the students are finishing their first expository piece. They had to explain what they are thankful for and why. This is due towards the middle of the week, and a the new prompt will be introduced. This time they will be explaining and important characteristic of being a good friend. It is very helpful if you talk with your child at home about ideas for their composition! In grammar, we will be reviewing complete and simple subjects and predicates. There will be a quiz on Thursday, 11/20 | Reading: We will continue working with nonfiction text and using text and graphic features to help with comprehension. We will be reading various articles in the November-December edition of National Geographic Magazine. The students will be responding to the articles in their Reading Response Journal. | We will begin learning about how freedom was gained in the Western Hemisphere and how Mexico gained independence from Spain. We will have an open book quiz on Tuesday, 11/18 over a short story "The Voices of the Alamo." |

Thursday: Literary Devices (Figurative Language) Test-Students should study their Writer's Notebook. Let me know if you have any questions. Have a great week!LanguageWe are learning about Figurative Language this week! The students are working on a figurative language flip book in class, although they may be asked to complete a page or two for homework. This should really help them out when we tackle writing. It will be taken as a major grade! We are still working on Subjects and Predicates in grammar. They will be tested one day next week over complete and simple subjects and predicates. Their grammar interactive notebook is a great study guide! ReadingWe are still reading Skinnybones, and we are all enjoying it! I am really encouraging the students to monitor their comprehension these last six chapters. They have created a chart in their Reading Response Journal where they are recording a method they used to better comprehend each chapter after every reading. I am hoping to finish the book early next week and administer a final test next week as well. Social StudiesWe are finishing up Chapter 1 in our Social Studies text book this week. The students will begin a review. Please look for a MAJOR test to be given over the entire chapter at the beginning of next week (Tuesday, 9/29 or Wednesday, 9/30). This test WILL NOT be open book, but if your child knows the review he or she will do great! Things to KnowFriday is Fort Bend County Fair Day. There is no school on Friday, 9/26

LanguageWriting: On Monday, 9/15 we will be working on Show, Don't Tell. I am really working on getting the students to write descriptively by using our 5 senses. They are doing a great job! I am hoping to administer a test assessing this skill on Tuesday, however if it appears as though the students need more time, we will take the assessment on Wednesday. On Wednesday we will begin learning types of Figurative Language and how to use them in our writing. We will continue this throughout the week. Grammar: We are working on complete and simple subjects and predicates ReadingWe are currently reading the book Skinnybones by Barbara Park. I think the students are really enjoying it! Every day we summarize, make inferences, and connect to the text. The students are also working on a fiction book report in class. This is going to be taken for a major grade. They are doing a great job! Social StudiesThere will be an open book assessment on "Texas Climates" pages 34-37 on Tuesday, September 16th. On September 17th we will begin learning about the people who lived in Texas long ago. The students will have a test on this, so please look for a study guide to come home. This test is NOT open book. The date of the assessment is to be determined. Have a wonderful week! |
